Poland\u2019s foreign minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski said Germany\u2019s WWII reparations are morally justified but legally \u201chopeless,\u201d even as President Karol Nawrocki demanded compensation and urged government backing. It is reported by Upmp.news with reference<\/a> to \u201cPolskie Radio\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sikorski, who is also deputy prime minister, wrote on X that he had \u201cpledged to vote for PiS if they secured reparations,\u201d but \u201cno transfer reached my family,\u201d adding that Poland\u2019s note to Germany \u201cdid not even include the word \u2018reparations.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf President Karol Nawrocki secures them, he gets my vote. Because he cannot be deceiving Poles, right?\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe government believes that although morally Poland deserves redress for German crimes during World War Two, legally the matter is unfortunately hopeless. But we will cheer the president\u2019s initiatives,\u201d Sikorski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also questioned why \u201cthe nationalist side\u201d does not seek reparations from Russia, which he said had \u201cappropriated\u201d compensation assigned to Poland at Potsdam. \u201cCurious,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a Monday ceremony at Westerplatte, Nawrocki said he demands reparations from Germany<\/a> \u201cto build a partnership with our western neighbor based on truth and good relations,\u201d and appealed for the government\u2019s support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs president of Poland, I unequivocally demand [reparations] for our future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said during a May visit to Warsaw that the reparations issue was \u201clegally closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs for legal issues in the context of possible reparations, they are closed. Which does not mean we will not talk about joint projects, joint ideas,\u201d Merz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
