Polish, EU top diplomats discuss further military support for Ukraine
Poland’s foreign minister has held talks with the European Union’s foreign-policy chief on stepping up military support for Ukraine and sanctions on Russia, following the Kremlin’s recent air strikes. It is reported by Upmp.news with reference to “Polskie Radio”.
Poland’s Radosław Sikorski and the EU’s Josep Borrell had a phone discussion on Wednesday night, according to officials.
Borrell later wrote on the X social media platform that the two spoke due to “intensified Russian air attacks against Ukraine civilian infrastructure.”
The EU’s foreign policy chief said he and Sikorski “agreed on the need to enhance our military support to Ukraine, including with long range and anti aircraft missiles.”
Borrell added his talks with Poland’s foreign minister also focused on “ways to reinforce anti-sanction circumvention measures, since the significantly increased European exports to third countries could be reexported to Russia.”
Sikorski thanked Borrell for his support of Ukraine, and said he was “looking forward to making tough decisions at our Foreign Affairs Council,” scheduled for January 22.
Russia on Tuesday morning launched an air attack on Ukraine’s two biggest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv, killing at least five people, and injuring 130, according to Ukrainian officials.
On Friday, Russia carried out the largest air attack of the war, killing at least 39 Ukrainian civilians, the Reuters news agency reported.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that between December 29 and January 2, Russia fired at least 500 missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles against his country.
Thursday is day 680 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
