Germany to urge more military aid to Ukraine at EU summit on February 1: reports

EU leaders will get together in Brussels on February 1, seeking to approve a EUR 50 billion package of financial aid for Ukraine, the Politico news service reported.
Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz is planning to use the summit to discuss the amount of military aid for Ukraine that individual EU nations have planned for this year, according to officials in Berlin.
Scholz on Monday said that the pledges made by most EU countries so far were “too small” and called on them to “step up their efforts in support of Ukraine” and make “higher contributions.”
Germany’s plan to discuss the issue at the EU summit is likely to raise pressure on such countries as Italy, France and Spain, which have donated “comparatively few military goods” to Ukraine so far, acording to official data, Politico said.
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said in an interview on Tuesday that Ukraine must be “given the tools” to repel the Russian invasion and that “the cost of deterring Putin after he conquers Ukraine would be much much higher than the cost of keeping the Ukrainians supplied now.”
Wednesday is day 686 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
