The Story, Challenges, and Mission of the “Nadiia” Children’s Home
Nestled in the Brovary district of the Kyiv region, the “Nadiia” Children’s Home stands as a beacon of hope for children navigating through life’s toughest challenges. For decades, this vital institution has provided refuge and support to children who have lost their families or found themselves in difficult circumstances, offering them a second chance at stability and growth. It was reported by Upmp.news.
Founded in the mid-1990s, in the wake of Ukraine’s independence, “Nadiia” emerged as a response to a growing social crisis. At a time when economic hardship and societal changes left many children without proper care, the home was created to offer not just shelter but a nurturing environment, education, and opportunities for personal development. Its mission went beyond addressing immediate needs, focusing on helping children rebuild their lives and prepare for a brighter future.
Over the years, “Nadiia” has evolved into one of the most trusted and respected institutions in the region with a dedicated team of professional educators, psychologists, and caregivers.
Nadiia has become more than just a temporary shelter — it has grown into a home, a place where children are given the opportunity to hope for and build a better future.
Like many social institutions, the Children’s Home “Nadiia” grapples with numerous challenges. Insufficient funding, outdated facilities, and a lack of modern resources for education and development are just a few of the daily obstacles it faces.
A critical focus of the home is providing psychological support for the children. Many of them arrive with traumatic experiences, making proper mental health care essential for their healing and development.
Recently, Yuliia Korniichuk, head of the Charity Foundation “Syla Myloserdia”, visited the children’s home. She spent meaningful time with the children, offering care and attention. Her visit is part of the foundation’s ongoing initiatives to support children who need extra compassion, love, and care.
“We see how important it is for these children to feel needed. Every child deserves a happy childhood, and it is our duty to do everything we can to make it happen. Our team makes every effort to ensure that each visit is not just an event, but part of a larger process of care,” said Yuliia Korniichuk, Head of the Charity Foundation “Syla Myloserdia”, during the meeting.
This event, which once again underscored the importance of initiatives that bring attention and warmth to children in need.
An analysis of the challenges faced by the Children’s Home “Nadiia” reveals several critical issues. Among them are the strained relationships with the local community and deputies, which often complicate the institution’s operations.
A key issue is the insufficient funding provided by local authorities. While the home receives valuable support from charitable organizations and individual patrons — for instance, through donations of school clothing and stationery — this assistance does not always meet the growing needs. The situation was further exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic when outbreaks of the disease were reported within the facility, placing additional strain on both staff and resources.
At the local political level, disputes over financial management and competing priorities often take center stage. Some deputies of the community advocate for alternative projects, drawing attention away from the orphanage’s pressing needs. This further complicates efforts to secure the basic necessities required to support the institution and its children.
These challenges highlight the urgent need for greater attention to the Children’s Home “Nadiia” from both local authorities and the wider public. Securing additional resources and fostering collaboration are crucial to ensuring the orphanage can continue its vital work.
Living Under Occupation
The year 2022 brought unprecedented challenges for the Children’s Home “Nadiia”. During the russian invasion of the Kyiv region, the orphanage found itself in the heart of the occupation zone. For several harrowing weeks, the facility was under the control of occupying forces.
Amid the chaos, the dedicated staff went to extraordinary lengths to protect the children. They worked tirelessly to ensure there was enough food, maintained a sense of calm, and shielded the children from the unfolding dangers as best they could.
The children were cut off from the outside world, without access to basic resources and medicine. But even in these terrible conditions, the staff did not leave the institution and continued to take care of each child.
After the liberation of the Kyiv region, the orphanage needed significant help to rebuild. The infrastructure was damaged, the supply of basic resources was disrupted, and the children’s psychological state required urgent rehabilitation.
A Call for Support
Today, the Children’s Home “Nadiia” needs our collective help more than ever. Funding is urgently required to repair the building, provide children with essential educational tools, hygiene products, clothing, and food. Additionally, providing psychosocial support to help the children heal from the trauma of the occupation is a critical priority.
Every contribution makes a difference. Together, we can help rebuild not just the walls of the orphanage but also restore hope for the children’s future.
We are launching a fundraiser to support the Children’s Home “Nadiia.” Every contribution, no matter how small, will help restore the institution and provide children with the opportunity for a new, happy life. Your support can bring hope and make a tangible difference in these children’s futures.
