RESEARCH: RUSSIANS WHITEN THE “ACHIEVEMENTS” OF SOVIET SECRET SERVICES

More and more Russians are positively evaluating the role of the Soviet secret services, which, according to experts, is, in particular, a consequence of pro-Kremlin propaganda. It is reported by Upmp.news with reference to Polish Radio.

Russians increasingly admire the work of the Soviet security services. Research on this topic has been published by the Yuri Levadi Russian Analytical Center.

According to sociologists polls, at least 40% of Russians believe that Cheka (political police created by the Bolsheviks) and the KGB (Committee for State Security) acted only in the interests of the state.

Russian historians studying Stalin’s crimes remind us that in the period of the USSR and in modern Russia false history influenced the level of knowledge of Russian society.

According to a study by Levada Center, only 12% of Russians associate the activities of the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission on Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage under the SNK of the RSFSR (Russian Cheka) with mass repressions and political assassinations. Such a low level of knowledge of Russians is a result of the activities of the KGB. Only 15% of Russians associate the KGB with denunciations, reprisals and persecutions.

Nikita Petrov, the historian of the human rights organization Memorial believes that such a condition of social consciousness is the result of the falsification of historical facts. “The crime was forgotten, some non-existent achievements were emphasized on. It is an example of turned upside down Soviet logic,” said the Russian historian.

At the same time, sociologists from the Levada Center state that an increase in the positive attitude towards Soviet security is associated with pro-Kremlin propaganda. Experts recall that the state media do not criticize the activities of the special services, but rather create a positive image for them.
