Ukrainian orchestra performs in Poland

The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine is scheduled to perform at the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall on Thursday. It is reported by Upmp.news with reference to “Polskie Radio”.

The programme of the concert includes The Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius, with Dmytro Udovychenko as the soloist, and two works by Ukrainian composers, Maxim Berezovsky’s Symphony in C major, and Yevhen Stankovich’s Symphony No. 2 (Dramatic).

Berezovsky was dubbed the Ukrainian Mozart. According to a programme note at the Warsaw Philharmonic’s website, his Symphony in C major, dating from the second half of the 18th century, “was long considered lost; after it was rediscovered in the Vatican’s archives at the beginning of the twenty-first century, it was soon hailed as the ‘first Russian symphony’ … This composition is an eminent example of just how advanced Ukrainian musical practice was in the eighteenth century, while at the same time manifesting tsarist Russia’s imperialist ambitions, including in the domain of culture.”

The programme note describes Stankovich’s Symphony No. 2, dating from 1975, as “a mature and unusual vision of heroism.”

The concert will be repeated on Friday at the Music Academy in Katowice, southern Poland.

In both concerts, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine will be conducted by its Artistic Director Volodymyr Sirenko.
